From Boone, NC, Grant Holder is a "Boonie," through and through. He always had an artistic side, even at a young age, starting with drawing cartoons. In middle school, he took art lessons with John Bond, the owner of local art shop, Art Mart & Academy and at the Blowing Rock Art and History Museum.
He was originally inspired by anime and comics. The illustrations and character designs, specifically faces, are what drew him to portraits. As he grew up, his inspiration transitioned to expressionism. He draws inspiration from Franz Mark, a German expressionist and cubist. Grant says, "I love the way he uses shapes and perceives reality." He says he wishes people will be able to relate to the feeling his art invokes. Through taking all available art courses at Watauga High School and progressing on his own, Grant became skilled in the use of oil pastel, charcoal, chalk pastel, graphite, pen and ink, and sculpture. People often remark on the level and effort required to achieve the detail in his works. Color theory is heavily involved in his technique to varying extents. Whether in abstract works, through color blocking or pointillist works utilizing the formation of separate but combined layers of color, the organization of color is obvious in his works. During his free time, Grant enjoys learning to sew, keeping up with current events and popculture, and hiking. He plans to attend Caldwell Community College this fall to complete general education requirements and further explore his interest in fashion design.
